Scorpion Commander ESC's

Postby Paul C on Fri Jan 22, 2010 10:32 pm

Guys

I've got a 90A Scorpion ESC that I've not put in the air yet and am finalising the setup. It's the 15V 4S Linear BEC version, having read the instructions it says input voltage should not exceed 15v, a fully charged 4s lipo being 16.8 or so can this ESC handle it ?

Also the instructions say ''if using more than ONE servo a we recommend a separate BEC''................ who's gonna be using ONE servo

The setup will be three x HS85MG and 1 x HS225MG, can these all be run through this ESC or do I need a separate BEC ?

Cheers
Paul

do you know what each servo draws?
easiest way is remove the centre wire (dont cut it out) of the servo plug on the ESC and then plug a 4.8v nicad into the battery socket on rx.

I know what you're saying Jamie, how can you remove the wire without cutting it or the plug off ?

Hi Paul

There is no problem in using a fully charged lipo on that Esc.. just remember to set the Low Voltage Cut Off to around 12.8 volts set on the esc by inputing 128 enter.

No problems with using more than one servo on that esc either i am using a 4s 55 amp on a heli using 4 digital servos and a gyro pulling over 50 amps on the eagle tree data logger with no problems.

The HS85MG's servos will not cause a problem as they are the non digital servo so the current draw from the servos will not be that high, and No you do not need a seperate BEC.

These ESC are easy to use and set up and perform very well, any problems please give me a call at Climb Out on 0208 66 88 335

Hope this helps you

Ade :-)

Thanks Ade,

Very helpful indeed, just a shame the Scorpion instructions say something different

Hi Paul

I Have 18 month experience with the Scorpion Esc's now and yes the instruction could do with being a bit better but the motor and Esc's are top gear :-)

as said just make sure you set the LVC first then any other settings you want to adjust to get it right for how you want it. might be worth leaving the IR Unit in unitl you are happy with your settings.

One last thing make sure you calibrate the top and bottom stick properly, then just go out and Enjoy :-)

using a knife blade lift the little tab on the connector and gently pull the corrosponding wire, a little gold pin is then revealed.
It can be done with any BEC ESC converting it to OPTO.

There a lot of ESC's not just Scorpion that say you can only use X amonut of servos to the amount of input voltage. The reason being is the BEC works buy stepping down the voltage, the more voltage it has to step down the hotter it gets and the less amount of servos it can drive.

Now the servos you are using are smaller sub standard size servos which will not draw as much as a normal servo, like you said the battery may be 16.8V fully charged but under load it will drop (depending on what motor prop).

I did once have a problem a CC ESC, it had 2 x 1.5A BECs and whilst on the bench setting up they would going thermal lock out as I had a fully charged li-po connected whilst setting up a heli linkage, because the motor was not running and lowering the battery voltage the BEC had to work harder to step down the voltage and could not cope so after a few minutes the BEC would fall over.

My advise is as Ade says it is fine, I would use a 4.8V Ni-Mh batt for setting up and once done do a long bench/range test with your normal Li-Po and BEC arrange to give you a piece of mind.

As Jamie says if you used a separate battery with the ESC pull out the red (+) pos wire from the ESC to the RX but make sure you leave the black - in as you need a common (-) neg for the signal to the ESC otherwise you may find the ESC signal floats.

I have used this exact setup with no issues and no need to use a separate BEC! 8-)

I know, I know, I didn't doubt you for a second  ;)

Just so annoying when instructions are so far off the truth
