A123 batteries - Do they exist or urban legend???

Postby Craven Moorhead on Wed Mar 03, 2010 5:38 pm

Sorry if I've lost the plot here but it appears many of you fine folk are using A123 batteries in your planes for your rx's and ignitions.

Am I just mis-googling or what? I cannot find anywhere in the UK that sell them!!

Any links to shops would be appreciated :)

also recommendations as to what to get, say for example on a Global 26cc EDGE with a DLE30 and 5 high torque servos

Also can you run your ignition and rx from the same battery or is it better/safer to have seperate ones?

All suggestions appreciated

They can be a little troublesome to track down but are well worth it IMO. Here are a few places that do them, whether they have them in stock I don't know ;)

I made my packs up from a Dewalt 36V battery pack about 2 years ago, but these seem to have become very pricey recently. It's not too difficult to make up your own pack, but you do need a powerful soldering iron to ensure a decent connections on the cells.

Good luck....

We use two 2300 2c A123 cells on our 100's driving both RX and Ignition, this gives us at least five flights.

On our 50cc we use one 2300 2c pack and this is good for 4 - 5 flights of 10 mins.

On the ignition feed you need to use a 6amp diode to drop the voltage by 0.7v otherwise you will over power the RCECL ignition.

Peter,
Is this the kind of thing you mean for the ignition?
