CARF Pitts 12 Build Thread

Postby Billy Bunter on Fri Mar 15, 2019 4:10 pm

So, a first post to start this thread. I just received the first pictures taken at the CARF factory and thus decided to use these images as the trigger for starting this thread.

I'm totally over the moon with how the custom British Flag scheme has come out!!! :dance: :clap: :dance:

Build will include:

* Custom aerofoiled flying wires
* Moki 300
* Carbon 34x18 prop
* Mix of JR and Futaba A700 servos
* Powerbox Royal
* Smoke pump
* Lots of Secraft and other 'bling'

Apparently its shipping out from Thailand at the end of next week. Should have it here in late April/Early May....

A minor development. The aerofoiled flying wires I ordered to brace the wings turned up this morning. A quite lovely piece of handmade craftmanship!

Magic, that will be brilliant Stuart, I love the Pitts 12 . I'm still flying my old Beast and I love it. This will be a whole other level. Looking forward to watching the build develop. All the best with her!

Dwazzer! I got the flying wires from Hans here: http://www.flying-wires.ch/flying-wires/index.html

Really nice guy to deal with and his workmanship is top notch!

Stunning scheme and great Job CARF did on the mouldings, it's a lot lighter than mine was!

So, I took a drive to M&R on Friday to collect the Pitts 12. The box it came in was huge (like an oversized coffin!) and only just went into my Vito MWB van.

Whilst driving home I decided to get the mounting system for the engine underway as the first item. I’d decided to make up a mount using a carbon mounting plate, with ply spacer rings. Looking for a nice clean implementation, I decided to get my good friend Nick Butler to machine these items up for me.

He was fantastic as usual, getting straight on this that afternoon. By 8pm that evening I had the mount pieces machined and in my hands. Nick had also milled out the centre of the prop to a 12mm hole size and added the six fixing bolt holes.

To my great frustration, I then found (yesterday) that the placement of the two lower fixing positions in the mount were too low…. The mounting bolt positions were just off the bottom of the front firewall – Arrgh! :x So, I’ve ordered some more sheets of ply and carbon, for Nick to do this for me again later this coming week to a revised machining pattern. Not a great start :whistle:

In the meantime I’ve got:

1). The UC legs fitted, with wheels and spats in place.
2). The tailwheel unit fitted (A white Rose unit)
3). I’ve cut the top half of the nose off at the front, to make it easier to work on the Moki engine and make adjustments to it.

Next jobs I’m planning are to fit the rudder servos (in the fuselage tail) and the elevators servos (in the stabs).
