Global RC 56" Sukhoi Build Thread

Postby Drewbags on Thu Apr 02, 2009 9:38 am

On mon received my 56" Sukhoi from Stu at Global RC - Kit was doubled boxed and arrived safe and sound.

Manufacturers specs are as follows:
Wingspan: 56"
Fuz Length: 53"
Wing Area: 650 sq in (42 sq dm)
Weight: 4.4-5.3lbs (2000-2400g)
Electric: A4520 Outrunner 4/5S 3700-5000Mah
Glow: .46-.52 2C or .52-.82 4C
5 Servos or 4 Servos + ESC

First impressions are very good, a well constructed airframe with decent covering (not sure if it is Profilm but looks strong), a moulded canopy and turtle deck and a FG cowl. The kit comes with a comprehensive hardware package including engine bearers and fuel tank for a glow setup and engine box and velcro for electric. The control hardware consists of ball links and threaded rods (both ends) and phenolic servo arms and control horns.

I am going electric on this one and my setup will use the hardware included in the kit. I am planning on using the Lipos from my TREX 500 which are 6S 3000mah so don't think I will lack power :D

The motor will be a Turnigy (Hobbycity) 50-65A 400Kv Brushless
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=4914

Turnigy 80A Plush ESC
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3727&Product_Name=TURNIGY_Plush_80A_w/_UBEC_Speed_Controller

I have bench run the motor with a 15x8 and a 16x8 APC-E prop; Full power gave me 1050W 52A on the 15x8 and 1300W 65A on the 16x8.

The plane is setup for std servos on ailerons and rudder and midi sized on the elevator. I am using what I had available at the time, JR811s on wings and tail and a 225mg on the elevator.

Have made good progress over the days or so and should be finished today; these planes go together very quickly especially the leccy version. I am very pleased with how it looks and hoping it will fly as well as it looks :)

Continuing on with the build which is very straight forward, I have installed the flying surfaces using the supplied hinges (CA ones) and glued in the control horns and installed the elevator and wing servos. There is only 1 elev servo and the 2 halves are joined by a wire stringer which seems to work fine; the cut-out is for a midi-sized servo (Hitec 225 size) but there is provision to enlarge the opening for a std sized if required.

The manual is not the most comprehensive but is adequate, for example when putting the stab into the fuz cut-out you have to remember to put the connecting rod for the elev halves and it is very scant on how to build/mount the engine box. Not beyond the capabilities of anyone who has built an ARF before.

Installation of the brushless motor involves building up the supplied plywood engine box or using an after market engine mount. I used the former and although there is no info in the manual about this procedure it is fairly straightforward.

There are 6 pieces of ply, with the front piece being backed with phenolic material and 4 holes to access the included bolts to mount the box onto the firewall. Something not mentioned in the manual is to take the back plate and mark the position on the screws onto the firewall before assembling the box. The front and rear plate of the box and the firewall are marked to assist in alignment, but I did crosscheck with the engine in position and the cowl on. The engine box is attached to the firewall with 5mm bolts and captive nuts.

Motor was then installed with ESC installed on the outside of the firewall, leaving the inside of the fuz clear for battery placement.

After installing the motor and ESC I had a quick check of the CG as I was a little concerned that my setup might make it nose heavy. However even with a midi tail servo the battery is in a mid position for a neutral CG, worth noting if thinking of a full size tail servo.

For info the weights of my electric setup are as follows:

Motor - 414g
ESC - 91g
6S Lipo 440g

Cowl attachment is via 4 self tappers.

Unfortunately I don't have any digital scale so have used our kitchen ones which are reasonably accurate???

The bare airframe comes in at 1310g
Servos - 160g
ESC - 91g
Motor - 420g
Lipo - 440g

So I reckon the flying wt will be around the 2300g mark.

looking good, i have been looking at one of these as the step up from the smaller edge version - tornado setup. I look forward to hearing how it flies. So far i have found these models to be top notch, the only issue, which is on all artf's, is that the undercarriage fixing is not as tough as i need - but hey that's probably a combination of my flying and the state of the ground at my local flying site.

maiden at the weekend then :D

cheers

Hi
looks very nice I also have ordered one of these , my only concern is the relationship between the elevator control horn and the hinge line it does appear slightly forward of the hinge line or is that just an optical illusion, looking forward to hearing how it flies
cheers
