House insurance cover to include contents of detached garage

Postby Rodder on Wed Aug 02, 2017 12:27 pm

Hello all.
I'm just renewing my house insurance again and notice I'm limited by the amount of cover I have in my detached garage.
By the time you take a few models and 5 good bikes into the equation I'm probably out of pocket if anyone was to break in and take a good chunk of it.

Can anyone recommend a good insurance company for covering a house and garage contents?

Rodder, if you find somebody then please let me know! I had £10k worth of bikes stolen out of my garage 2 years ago. Insurance broker reneged on the claim stating I had not specified the items and yet the documentation stated I only needed to itemise items over £2k and all would be covered. I had 6 bikes stolen!!
Took the insurer to the Ombudsman and they sided with the insurer even though their paperwork stated that items over £2k needed to be specified. Ombudsman protects their own!

Ok
I'll see if I can find any good deals, and if I do let you know.
I've previously looked at specialist insurance but the premiums were eye watering.

With my current policy the wording is to my mind non specific and full of statements and disclaimers.
I do phone up the agent and ask if it's covered and get to told " yes" but suspect in the event of a claim they have lots of get outs.

As for the ombudsman, yes I'm pretty sure they are on the payroll. At the end of the day they will be in the same industry, ( and pretty capable within it) otherwise they couldn't be considered qualified at hearing your claims. They probably think long term and protect their future employment in the industry. Ever seen a skint insurance broker?

Speak to APlan insurance. Theyre a broker who have provided me with this type of cover via Axa Insurance. I deal with the Banbury branch. Contents of outbuildings are covered by the house contents cover.
